The Reward Thing

I am a writer and I am evil and all that stuff, but inside I’m still a little kid. So when I saw Victoria Schwab’s calendar motivational tool I pretty much melted.

When I was a kid in school I coveted reward stars from the teacher, especially the special gold foil ones. So shiny. So gold. So clearly marking my work as special.

The idea of keeping track of my writing (and other) goals by sticking stars on a calendar totally appeals to me, so I started yesterday. To make things even more fun, I picked up some sparkly dragon stickers for really special days – finishing drafts, for example. Can’t wait to stick my first dragon on that calendar.

You may or may not have noticed that I actually blogged here last week when it’s my turn to be evil THIS week, so in addition to the stars I clearly need a calendar. This idea is win all the way around. Plus, Victoria is adorable and awesome. You should read her books. And you should totally watch this vlog in which she explains the calendar system, because I’m going to be too busy meeting my goals for the day to explain it to you. Gotta get my stickers!

I did something similar when studying for the professional engineering exam. Worked wonderfully. I met Victoria at Phoenix comicon last weekend. Such a nice person, very interesting to talk to. I didn’t know much about her before that, but I’m a big fan now.

Rewards are better than sticks, any day. And if you haven’t read any of Victoria’s stuff, it’s definitely worth the read. 🙂
